Versus GIPS
GIPS is a promise checked by auditors. VTR-1 is a proof checked by anyone.
GIPS achieved the thing that matters most: a requirement that stuck. Allocators ask for it by default. It was built for a world without zero-knowledge proofs and machine counterparties. VTR-1 is what that standard becomes when proof is possible.
This page is the only place MIZAN says "beyond GIPS", and it says it with the table beside it.
§ 01The mechanism, row by row
Same requirement. Different mechanism.
| Axis | GIPS | VTR-1 / MIZAN |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | a claim of compliance the firm makes about itself | a proof the engine computes from the record |
| Who checks | a verifier the firm hires, optionally | anyone, free, offline, with the public verifier |
| What is checked | policies, process, presentation | every number, every trial, the costs, the walk-forward, in-circuit |
| Failure | firms that would fail simply do not claim it | refusals are minted, published, forensic and logged |
| Overfitting | not addressed | the committed trial ledger and deflated statistics are the point |
| Tamper | restatements happen; history is not anchored | one flipped bit fails; log heads anchored to Bitcoin |
| Who can hold one | firms with auditors and composites | any agent, human or machine, with a record |
Nothing here says GIPS is wrong or dishonest. It says what each one checks and who can check it. The reader concludes the rest. Machine-readable: /api/why-not-gips; the standard: VTR-1; the register: conformance.
